Jose Fernandez February 01, 1921 – December 24, 2018 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Jose “Bigotes” Fernandez, 97 years old, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2018 surrounded by his family. Born in Orense, Spain in 1921, he immigrated to Newark, NJ in 1958 before building his final home and settling down in Linden, NJ in 1970. A veteran of the Spanish military during the Spanish Civil War, Jose became a migrant worker in Argentina and Venezuela before moving his family to the U.S. for a better life.

He was a mason before joining the International Longshoreman’s Association Local 1235, a member of 25 years. Jose enjoyed raising dogs, hunting, gardening, making wine, smoking chorizo, and building small inventions with his tools. Jose is predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Carmen Fernandez, and his cherished, eldest daughter, Antonia Garcia.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Maria Ferreira and Benigna Cuco; sons-in-law, Moncho Garcia, Abel Ferreira, and John Cuco; six grandchildren, Cristina, Diana, Andrew, Adriana, Steven, and Eric; eight great-grandchildren, Chloe, Julien, Charlotte, Audra, Peyton, Anika, Madelyn, and Emma; and his cherished cat companion, Bisou. Jose was a strong man in character. He loved his family very much.

He is dearly missed. There is a viewing on Friday, December 28, 2018 between 6pm-9pm at the Werson Funeral Home, 635 North Wood Avenue, Linden, NJ. The funeral will begin on Saturday, December 29, 2018, leaving the funeral home at 9:45 am for a funeral mass at St. Michael Church in Cranford, NJ at 10:30 am.

Entombment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA. 02241-7005, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Memphis, Tennessee, 38148.
