He was born on October 6, 1944 in Waiohinu, Hawaii. He was a former electrician, a musician and U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran.

He was also a member & music director for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Naalehu and president of the Naalehu OU Senior Center. Visitation will held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 26, 2019) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Naalehu; Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.; burial to follow at Naalehu Community Cemetery.

Casual attire. Survived by, children, Joseph “Magee” (Shelley) Akiu, Jr. of Waiohinu, Emma (Wilmet) Akiu of Pahala, Dwayne Kuahiwinui of Los Angeles, California, Nora (Donald) Lance of Ocean View, Paul (Cliff-Ann) Kuahiwinui of Waiohinu, James (Tina) Kuahiwinui of Washington and Rodney (Suzie) Kuahiwinui of South Point; sister, Margaret Lee Hong of Hilo; 34 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
