Obituary for Judy Cecelia Harris On the cloudy, autumn afternoon of November 8th, the earth heaved a great sigh as Judy peacefully left this earth and was delivered into the arms of our heavenly Father. Always thinking of others first, Judy worked out a plan with the Lord to make sure her family had the privilege of escorting her on the journey into heaven – and they surrounded her with love as she walked towards God while still holding her husband’s hand. Judy Cecelia Harris was born in the Warwoman Community of Clayton, Georgia, on June 12, 1945.

She was the loving daughter of the late Lewis Shirley Speed and Annie Mae Moore Speed. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Lewis (Bud) Speed and Bill Speed; and two sisters, Joan Elizabeth and Mildred Sheryl Speed. Judy is survived by her husband and soulmate, Johnny Harris; two daughters, Sherry Harris Couch (Mike) of Carrollton, Georgia, and Misty Harris Holcomb (Jamie), of Atlanta, Georgia.

Two grandchildren, John Michael Couch and Brandy Cecelia Couch of Carrollton. Judy also leaves behind four brothers and four sisters as well as cherished nephews, nieces, and cousins. Judy loved cooking, gardening, canning, reading and the Lord – not necessarily in that order.

Her hobbies were all just variations on the same theme: providing for others and making them happy. An amazing woman who will be missed for her gift of cooking as much as her loving spirit, she showered love on family and friends with food in abundant amounts. Judy loved to plant a garden every year with her husband, Johnny.

Together, they spent many summer days tending to vegetables which always made their way to the supper table and picking fruit to make beautiful jams and jellies. On special years, their harvest included pounds of pecans, each one picked up by hand. An avid reader, she enjoyed countless hours finding the next stack of books for her nightstand as well as collecting cookbooks.

Most of all, Judy loved the Lord and talked with Him daily. She fervently prayed for her loved ones every day and while her faith carried her through hard times – it was her example of simple, unwavering trust in God that also carried her family through life. She was the perfect whole of two halves: One half was a selfless, tireless woman who loved you more than you knew anyone ever would in your whole life.

The other half was a fierce, protective soul who would fight for you in a minute and strived for perfection in everything she did. A small, beautiful woman with a heart the size of a mountain, she carried her family with a warrior-like strength. She would love you and keep you straight at the same time — and the overwhelming love and strength made you a better person by just being around her.

We know that the sun will keep rising on a world without our Judy in it – but even the sun will shine a little less brightly without the beautiful, blinding light of her presence here on Earth. While our faith in God tells us that we will see her again, our earthly minds and hearts feel that the enormous hole left by her passing is just too big of a burden to bear. And if she were still here, she would set us straight and tell us to toughen up…and then she would pick us up and carry us through.
