Obituary for Laura Tavares Silva Laura Tavares Silva, 91, of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018 Laura was born on January 28, 1927 in Bridgeport, CT to Mario Viera Tavares and Precioza Machado Tavares. She was raised in Yonkers, NY and was a resident of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY for 71 years, a Village she held dear to her heart, living in the home built by her father and husband of 68 years, Clarence Silva, who predeceased her in 2013. She is also predeceased by her sisters, Linda Centonze and Ilda “Penny” Komorowski, and her brothers Antonio Tavares, Charles Tavares and Carlos Tavares.
Laura graduated from Commerce High School in Yonkers, NY where she served as Secretary of her student government. Laura was a skilled bookkeeper and worked at Anaconda Wire and Cable for over 25 years where she was responsible for overseeing government contracts until Anaconda closed in 1975. Afterwards, she worked in New York City as a Vice President at Laribee Wire and Cable.
Long after most people choose to retire, Laura, always content to put in a hard day’s work, continued working in billing and accounts receivable at a variety of doctors’ offices until the age of 85. Laura was very involved in the local Portuguese community, a first generation American fluent in Portuguese, she helped numerous Portuguese immigrants navigate the arduous path to becoming American citizens, a labor of love which led to a number of valued life time friendships. Laura was a loving and cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt.
She thoroughly enjoyed the simple pleasures of life including puzzles, card games, watching tennis and crime dramas on television and spending time with her loving husband and extended family. Laura is survived by her daughters, Linda Bell of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, formerly of West Redding, CT, and Irene Paletta (Joe Seechack) of Midlothian, VA, formerly of Mahopac, NY. Her sons-in-law, William Lloyd Bell, III and aRtie Paletta, predeceased her.
She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Patrick Randolph Bell, Esq. of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, Michael Bell of Travelers Rest, SC, Dr. Laura Elizabeth Paletta-Hobbs (Adam Hobbs) of Midlothian, VA, Eve Justine Paletta-Weaver of Midlothian, VA, and her great-granddaughter, Jasmine Alexis Weaver and many devoted nieces and nephews. The visitation will be held at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home, located at 64 Ashford Ave.
, Dobbs Ferry, NY on Wednesday, September 26, between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 27, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, 616 Warburton Ave. , Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 114 Sprain Road, Yonkers, NY.
