Obituary for Lawrence Pepper Lawrence LaVere Pepper, age 88, departed earth for his Heavenly home on October 6, 2018. LaVere was born on December 10, 1929, in Kendall, Kansas, to Donald C. and Vera (Stinchcomb) Pepper. LaVere attended four and a half years of primary school in Kendall, Kansas; before moving to Syracuse where he continued his education graduating from Syracuse High School in 1947.

LaVere moved to Johnson in 1950 to begin his farming career. That was interrupted by the US Army draft in 1953. LaVere served his country on active duty in the Korean Conflict and in Okinawa, Japan.

He earned the rank of Corporal and received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He served in active and reserve status until his discharge in September 1961. LaVere met Yvonne Pepper in August 1960 on a blind date.

They were married December 26, 1961, and made Johnson their home. LaVere loved the land and farmed in Stanton, Morton and Grant counties for the next 58 years. LaVere was a devout Christian and was a member of Bethel Church of the Nazarene for 57 years.

LaVere was preceded in death by his only son, Allyn Pepper; his parents, Donald and Vera Pepper; and brother, Weyland Pepper. Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Pepper of the home; a sister, Donna Lou Elder of Leoti, Kansas; a brother, Clifford Pepper of Liberal Kansas; daughter-in-law, Karen Pepper of Yukon, Oklahoma; grandson, Kiel Pepper and his wife Liberty of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grand-daughter, Kendra Houston and her husband Prescott of Geary, Oklahoma; two great-grandchildren, Riggins Earl Houston and Emma Elizabeth Pepper; and numerous family and friends. Memorial service will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Bethel Church of the Nazarene of Johnson, Kansas, with Pastor Paul Shellenberger officiating with military rites by VFW Post #3684.

Inurnment will be at Stanton County Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made be made to the LaVere Pepper Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.
