Leo A. Brown, Sr., 83, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully late Wednesday morning, April 18, 2018, surrounded by his family at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky. Born on December 10, 1934, in Sandusky, OH the son of Leo Frank and Martha Susanne (Ringlein) Brown. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary’s High School.
At a very young age, Leo had joined the family business, Leo F. Brown Plumbing and Heating, which he would eventually co-own and operate with his brother, Carl. For 65 years, Leo had been a licensed Master Plumber. Over the years, he enjoyed making wine, but he especially loved getting together with his many friends for lunch or breakfast at their weekly designated spots, being either at a local Club or donut shop.
Leo had a love for flying, which he hoped to someday learn to do, but was never able to find time for. Although he did find time to take yearly flights on the “Tin Goose” and was a long time supporter of the Tin Goose Association. He also was fascinated by the “Eagle” and had quite an extensive collection of pictures and memorabilia pertaining to its flight.
When he had the need for speed and openness, Leo could be found wheeling around town in his convertible, which he truly loved. He had a big heart and was a big supporter of many local charities and fund raisers, especially those that dealt with the Sandusky Police or Fire Department Charities. Leo was a member of Sts.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he had been an usher, and had also attended Holy Angels Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 546, life member of the Sandusky Elks Lodge # 285, the Maritime Museum and the Liberty Aviation Museum, member of the Sandusky Orioles Club, the Firelands Symphony and the Sandusky State Theatre Association. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara M. “Barb” (Korden) Brown; two sons, Leo A. (Karen) Brown, Jr. of Huron and Joe Brown of Atlanta, GA; a grandson, Mitchell; two sisters, Celeste (Dr. Vincent) Schlicht of Sandusky and Martha (Samuel) Dietrich of Plymouth; a sister-in-law, Judy Brown of Sandusky; and nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Carl J. Brown (2017).
Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon, April 22, 2018, from 4-7 pm at the David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Prayers will be recited Monday morning, April 23, 2018, at 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Avenue, Sandusky, OH, Fr. Joe Steinbauer officiating.
It was his wish to be cremated following the Mass. Interment will be held later in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Sandusky State Theatre, 107 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to the Merry-Go-Round Museum, 301 Jackson Street, Sandusky, OH 44870.
