Lillian Marie Smith, 85, passed away peacefully Saturday at Wingate of East Longmeadow. Lillian was born February 11, 1933 in Springfield to the late Edward F. And Elizabeth F. (Shulda) McCarthy. She grew up in West Springfield, raised a family in East Longmeadow then returned to live a block from her childhood home.

Lillian retired from Mercy Hospital after 25 years of dedicated service in their Life Laboratory. She was a woman devoted to her faith and was a communicant to St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield. Lillian is survived by her children Cheryl Rubin of West Springfield, Cynthia Bourgault of West Springfield, Douglas Smith and his wife Paula of Enfield and Kenneth Smith of West Springfield.

She was the cherished grandmother to 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her sister Leah Cavanaugh and her dear friend “Betsy” Dunn. Calling hours for Lillian will be Wednesday from 4:00-7:00pm at TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9:00am at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine Street, West Springfield. Burial to follow at St. Thomas Cemetery in West Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Lillian’s name to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 47 Pine Street, West Springfield, MA 01089.
