Mary Patricia (O’Brien) Kennedy, 98, passed away Sunday at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Westfield on October 29th, 1919 to the late James and Sadie (Sullivan) O’Brien. Mary grew up in Springfield, graduated from Sacred Heart High School and later from Springfield Business School.

She lived most of her life in West Springfield. Years ago, she worked in the accounting division of American Bosch and later she worked in the accounting department of New England Telephone, she retired from there in 1981. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She was a communicant of St. Thomas Church and an active member in their Women’s Club. Mary loved traveling to her winter home in Montserrat in the West Indies where she spent many of her later years. This became a family retreat and all who visited enjoy fond lifelong memories.

During her time there, Mary became very involved in the community. She loved all kinds of crafts and created many for her family and friends over the years. She was the loving widow of Joseph E. Kennedy who passed away in 1970, loving mother of Joseph E. Kennedy and his wife Barbara of Darien, CT, Mary Lou Dragon of Holly Springs, NC, Dr. Gail A. Kennedy of Cape Coral, FL, Brian M. Kennedy and his wife Connie of West Springfield, Stephen P. Kennedy and his wife Judy of Springfield, and the late James M. Kennedy (2007) and Patricia J. Kennedy (2013), caring sister of Barbara A. Donovan and her husband John of West Springfield and sister-in-law of Elizabeth O’Brien of Wilmington, MA, devoted grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 12.

Mary was predeceased by her cherished grandson Brian Kennedy in 2017. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 AM at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield followed at 11 AM by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-7 PM at the funeral home. The family extends a special thanks to Joan Jones of Caring Solutions and Baystate Hospice. They would also like to thank her other special caregiver; Helen Murphy-Avis, Peg Cauley and Deb Monarco, and we ask in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to the Helen Murphy-Avis Assisted Living Services, 120 Chestnut Street, East Longmeadow, MA 01028 or to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
