Lois F Spangle , October 19, 1921 — January 04, 2019

Lois’ Obituary Lois F Spangle, age 97, of Ashland, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side, on Friday, January 4, 2019, at Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born October 19, 1921, in Ashland, the daughter of Alphonse and Lorna (Kollauf) Gustafson. As a child, she was a lighthouse keeper’s daughter and spent time in Houghton-Hancock, MI, Long Island, and on Devil’s Island.

In 1939, she graduated from Ashland High School and then attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth for a Physical Education major, prior to going to work during WWII. On July 31, 1945 when her fiancé, Ernest P “Ernie” Spangle, was on leave from the US Navy, they got married in New York City, NY. For a short time, Lois worked for the county agent at the Ashland County Court House.

Prior to her retirement, she worked for over 20 years at the State of Wisconsin Unemployment Compensation Department-Job Service. Lois was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Congregational Church, in Ashland. She also was a member of the Descendants of Lighthouse Keepers and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary at the State and Local levels.

Lois enjoyed being in the outdoors and in nature, being on the islands, walking, flower gardening, and spending time with her family at Lake Delta, after her retirement. She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Ernie, Ashland; four children, Lillie (Larry) Sullivan, Milwaukee, Randy (Sue) Spangle, Ashland, Lana (Verne) Gilbreaith, Hermantown, MN, and Kim (Jim) Juno, Bennington, NE; nine grandchildren, Erica (Tom) Renner, Mark Sullivan, Katie (Maj-Britt Williams) Sullivan, Laurie (Tim) Bauer, Steve (Jenni) Spangle, Brian Peterson, Sharla (Paul) Peterson-Shirley, Kristina (Brandon) Nutsch, and David (Hannah) Juno; and 12 great-grandchildren, Summer, Tulsi, Ashley, Aaron, Ella, Adeline, Grace, Lillian, Jayda, Alex, Tyler, and Grayson. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 11, 2019 at the United Presbyterian Congregational Church, in Ashland. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday, at the church. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 11, 2019, at Mt.

Hope Cemetery, in Ashland. In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a memorial fund. Arrangements are by Frost Home for Funerals, in Ashland.
