Evan’s Obituary Evan R. Nelson, 88, of South Range and La Pointe, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn, with his daughters by his side. He was born May 12, 1930, on Madeline Island, the son of Nels and Edna (Russell) Nelson. Evan graduated from Ashland High School in 1948.

He married Betty Ann Olson of Bayfield on May 12, 1951, in La Pointe, enjoying 60 years of marriage. He served with the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. Evan worked as a licensed grain inspector/weigher at the Peavey and Cargill grain elevators in Duluth, MN, for 42 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ, La Pointe. He loved spending time with his family on Madeline Island and on Lake Superior. Evan enjoyed fishing, boating, photography, hand-tooled leather work, and building bluebird houses to assist with the restoration of the Eastern bluebird.

As a proud veteran and DAV member, participation in the La Pointe Memorial Day service and the July 4th parade were annual traditions for Evan. In 2017 Evan traveled to Washington D.C. with the Northland Honor Flight. He is survived by his four children, Daniel (Kate) Nelson, Groton, CT, Julie Nelson, Washburn, Janice Nelson, Ashland, and Bonnie (Jon) Lumberg, Ashland; four grandchildren, Jack Dunn, Peter Dunn, Owen Nelson, and Emma Nelson; a son-in-law, Jerry Dunn; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; a daughter, Joni Nelson Dunn; and eight siblings, Earl, Lois, Nels Roy, Elmer, Harry, Jack, Tommy, and Arnie. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 11, 2019, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in La Pointe, with Pastor Rachel Bauman officiating. Visitation one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Bratley Funeral Home, Washburn.
