Lois Ruth Artis Marks, 82, of Harrisburg, NC, formerly of Penncraft, PA, passed away peacefully, Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast in Concord, NC, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Marks was born October 3, 1936 in Brownsville, PA, to the late Ralph Bert Artis and the late Ruth Elaine Boll Artis. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Leota Dee Greenwood and Arabella Jean Keenan.

Mrs. Marks was a 1954 graduate of Brownsville High School and was also a 1957 graduate of Washington Hospital School of Nursing, Washington, PA. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Washington Hospital, PA; Riverside Hospital, VA; Children’s Hospital, HI; and Uniontown Hospital, PA. As an Army wife for 28 years, in a position referred to as the toughest job in the Army, the Marks family established homes in Fort Monroe, VA; Heilbronn, Germany; Fort Wayne, MI; Fort Meade, MD; Albuquerque, NM; Penncraft, PA; Fort Bragg, NC; Pirmasens, Germany; Picatenny Arsenal, NJ; Honolulu, HI; Cape Canaveral, FL; and Harrisburg, NC.

Mrs. Marks served as Historian, Elder, and Deaconess at First Christian Church, Republic, PA, and later attended at Harrisburg United Methodist Church, Harrisburg, NC. Survivors include beloved husband of 60 years, Stanley Ray Marks of the home; daughter, Cindy Fowler and husband, Ross, of Raleigh, NC; son, Stanley Ray Marks, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; son, Alan Robert Marks and wife, Robin, of Harrisburg, NC; sister, Betty Lou Wainwright of Mobile, AL; granddaughter, Amanda Ruth Fowler; grandson, Adam Ryan Marks and fiance, Angela Grace Overby; grandson, Jake Alan Marks; granddaughter, Angela Jean Fowler and fiance, Tillmon Edward Cook; nephew, Sam Keenan; niece, Judy Fedor; nephew, Bill Greenwood; and nephew, Steve McClellan. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg, NC.

A celebration of life service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the funeral home chapel. Mrs. Marks will be laid to rest at Salisbury National Cemetery, NC, during a private service. Memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, Republic, PA.
