Lucile “Lucy” Matson Campbell Lucile Matson Campbell passed away gracefully and in peace June 17th, 2018. Lucile was born to Charles and Ellen Matson August 24th, 1919 in Sac City, Iowa. She grew up on a farm until she was 10 years old, then having to move to Sioux City, Iowa with her younger sister Vivian and brother Don, due to losing their farm during the Great Depression.

Lucy graduated from Central High School, Castle on the Hill in 1937 with honors, and then went on to one year of business school. After working at any job she could find during the depression, she landed a good job as a secretary with Otis Elevator and was transferred to St. Louis, MO.
Her dream was to work as an executive secretary in Chicago and in 1943 she packed up her bags and moved. She loved living in the city of Chicago. One of her favorite memories of living in Chicago was when the war ended.
She described the experience so vividly when it was announced over the loud speakers that the war had ended and how she was standing at State and Madison making her way to Michigan avenue and was reveling with everyone hugging, kissing and cheering that the war was over. After working for several colorful employers in the city of Chicago, she landed a job with Testworth Laboratories, Inc., owned by Stan Campbell. They fell in love, were married and the rest is history after 49 years of marriage.
Lucy, taking on the accountant work, with her husband Stan, ran the company together until 2011, a 70 year run. Lucy and Stan have been living in the Eagle River area for over 50 years. Lucy had a zest for life and loved living.
When she was young, she loved to dance to big band music live with Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey and so many other big bands. She was an avid golfer into her mid to late 80’s and a member of the Ladies Golf League at the Eagle River Golf Course. Her dream was to always get over the pond on #6.
She loved boating and was a tenacious reader. Her all- time favorite book was “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”. She conquered the most difficult crossword and acrostic puzzles, loved to watch jeopardy and her beloved Green Bay Packers.
On Packer game day she would dress in her green and yellow garb and be an arm chair coach. She could be highly opinionated if the correct plays were not called! She mostly loved to be with her children, grandchildren and extended families and friends, especially adopted daughters Barb Spiess Waldera (Mike) and Debra Shimanek (Dennis) and most recently adopted daughter Patti Marquis.
These three girls doted over Lucy with tender love and laughter. She would often say that the best years of her life was raising all of her children and being together as a family. Her Granddaughter Rachel, brought her much joy in playing her favorite piano music and how she loved music.
She opened her drapes every morning to look at her beautiful picture perfect window of nature, her lake and all her birds and animals. Her laughter, smile and encouragement was contagious and she was the most dedicated mother, grandmother, wife, sister and friend one could ever have. She always was in favor of the underdog and took in stray animals and people of all kinds.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband Stan Campbell Sr., son, Richard Campbell, brothers, Norman Matson and Donald Matson, daughter Kay Keys and granddaughter Cindy Campbell. She is survived by her daughter, Ginny Campbell, Post Falls, ID, son(s), Rob Campbell (Linda), Elk Grove Village, IL, Willie Campbell, Eagle River, WI, Stan Campbell Jr. (Jackie), Bokeelia, FL, Mark Campbell (Liz), Boca Raton, FL, Mike Campbell Sr. (Shirley), Eagle River, WI, sister Vivian Rodenhizer of Chicago, IL. .
She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Our family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and caregivers at the Eagle River Hospital and Weston St. Clare’s Hospital for their extraordinary care. We especially would like to thank her personal caregivers, Chris, Julie and Margaret for the gentle and kind care they gave to her and made it possible for her to stay in her own home.
Services will be held at Gaffney Busha Funeral Home on Thursday, June 28th with visitation from 1-2 pm, Service will begin at 2pm. Interment will follow at the Eagle River Cemetery. There will be a reception to follow at the Eagle River Golf Course.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eagle River Fishing Has No Boundaries or the Boys Town of Nebraska.
