LUCILLE MAY (HINKLEY) PEACOCK 1925-2018 GARDINER – Lucille May Hinkley Peacock, 93, of Gardiner, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, following a period of declining health, after suffering a hip fracture in October, 2017. She was born in Randolph, Maine on April 15, 1925, the second of five children born to John Wilson Hinkley and Cherrie Blossom Stetson Hinkley. She grew up on Windsor Street in Randolph, and attended local schools in Randolph and Gardiner.
She graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1943. After finishing high school, she worked at Textron, Inc., a ladies’ slip factory in South Gardiner, where she sewed straps onto the slips. She married Raymond M. Peacock on June 26, 1948 and they started a family, eventually having five daughters.
They were married for 56 years until his passing on April 9, 2005. Lucille was a homemaker for most of her adult life and enjoyed the simple things life had to offer. She never held a driver’s license, but she was most content at home anyway, surrounded by her family.
She babysat for many children in her home, off and on, through the years, some of whom still have fond and loving memories of her. She liked spending time in her kitchen and was a wonderful cook and baker who prepared delicious meals, and scrumptious desserts. Her homemade biscuits, pies, chocolate cake, chocolate chip blonde brownies, and banana bread muffins were just a few of her specialties, which she enjoyed making and sharing with others, even after she turned 90.
She was blessed and felt very fortunate to have been able to remain at home and live independently until she was 92 ½ years old. She was a long-standing member of The First Baptist Church of Gardiner, and was fondly thought of by her church family. She enjoyed family gatherings, and was a huge supporter of her grandchildren’s activities and ballgames through the years.
She was an avid reader and also enjoyed “playing with the newspaper” (doing crossword puzzles, the Daily Jumble, Cryptoquotes & Sudoku puzzles in the K.J.), even doing some of the crossword the day before her passing. She was a good seamstress and enjoyed making clothing for her children and grandchildren when they were young. She also loved to knit and crochet, and over the years she made beautiful hand-knit mittens for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and other children, as well.
She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, who was dearly loved and admired by her family. She was a huge part of all of our lives and she will be deeply missed. Lucille was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Raymond; her daughter, Katherine (“Kathy”) Peacock Eichel; and three of her four siblings, John W. (“Buster”) Hinkley; Leon E. Hinkley; and Lura B. Fowles; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, several nephews and a niece.
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands: Jean (David) Ladd, of Gardiner; Shirley (Phil) Chadbourne, of Chelsea; Nancy (Johnny) Greenleaf, of Randolph; Sharon (Robin) Goodwin, of Pittston; 7 grandchildren: Larry (Kelly) Chadbourne; Michelle (Chris) Roberts; Adam Ladd (Lindsey Sirois); Jered (Katie) Ladd; Amy Stevens; Brian (Bethany) Goodwin; Eric Goodwin (Emily Michaud); and 12 great-grandchildren: Caleb, Tiffany and Eli Chadbourne; Chase and Bryce Roberts; Hailey, Ashley and Emily Ladd; Willow Ladd; Nathaniel Stevens; Lainey Goodwin and Paisley Goodwin. She is also survived by her brother, Richard L. Hinkley, of Randolph; a step-daughter, Sandra (Joseph) Mills, whom she thought of as another daughter, of Chelsea; step-grandchildren: Janet Bennett; Joe, Jeff and Jason Mills; and step-great-grandchildren: John and Joel Bennett; and Hannah, Tailah, Courtney, Nicholas, Jacob and Casey Mills; special nieces, Donna Buckley; Margaret (“Peggy”) Hinkley and Virginia (“Ginnie”) Fowles; special nephew, Richard (“Dickie”) Webb; and several other nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Augusta Rehab for the special care they provided to our mother during her stay there.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 15th from 5-7 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 16th at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 47 Church Street, Gardiner. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Annex on Windsor Street in Randolph.
