She was 92 years old. Nadine was born August 23,1926 at the Bradley family home six miles SW of Long Lane, Missouri, the eighth child in a family of thirteen children.

She was the daughter of Wilford A. and Alma Ellen Gaunt Bradley. Nadine had had six sisters: Dessie, Essie, Eula, Naomi, Irene, and Phyllis, and six brothers: Levin, Elbert, Bill, Buddy, Travis, and Avery. Of those family members, her sister Phyllis survives.

She attended Pattersonville Grade School and Buffalo High School. After graduation, she attended Southwest Missouri State College and earned a teaching certificate. She taught grades one through eight at Cowden Elementary School for three years.

Nadine and Eugene Burtin met on a school bus when they were 15 years old and they have been a couple since then. In the summer of 1942, Eugene’s family moved to Eureka where he finished high school. He enlisted in the US Army in 1945, and Nadine traveled to California to live near Camp Roberts where he was in basic training.

Shortly after he came home, they eloped and were secretly married in Oswego, KS on November 9, 1946. Nadine returned to her family home in Missouri to finish her teaching job and Eugene stayed in Eureka. Soon, Nadine’s sister Phyllis found the marriage license and their secret was no more.

In January of 1947 the couple was shivereed at the Bradley farm and Eugene was certain that Nadine’s ornery brothers would throw him in the river. Nadine moved to Eureka in April 1947 to be with Eugene, and they began their forever life together. Nadine was active in Rebecca Lodge, PTA, a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout Den mother for two different stints, and volunteer work for United Fund, Cancer drive, Heart Fund ,and Easter Seals.

In 1955, Eugene and Nadine joined the Christian Church and have served in various capacities. Nadine has taught Bible School, served as Deaconess, and as a leader and chairman for many groups in the church. She also served on the Greenwood County Election Board for many years.

She also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and boating with family. She and Eugene traveled to many states and visited Canada and Mexico several times. She loved to garden, cook, read the Bible and the local newspaper, sew, crochet, and do embroidery work.

She shared many stories about the hard work and fun she had while growing up with her large family in Missouri. The Bradley family has continued to be a very loving and supporting group for one another. Nadine is survived by her husband, Eugene Burtin, of Eureka, KS, their three children; Carol Moore (Bill Kelly) of Mission, KS, Greg Burtin and his wife Irene, of Topeka, KS, and Brian Burtin and his wife Susan, of Andover, KS.
