Lyle Glenn Johnson, 72, passed away on November 22, 2018 at his home in Sutton. Lyle was born on June 5, 1946 in Bottineau, North Dakota to LeRoy and Gladys Johnson. The family moved to Alaska via the AL-CAN Highway in 1956 and settled in Sutton where his Dad and Uncle Paul Johnson became coal miners.
Lyle’s family later moved to Anchorage where he lived through the 1964 earthquake and graduated from East High in 1965. He joined the Alaska National Guard right after high school. He worked ANG search and rescue operations during the Fairbanks flood in August 1967.
As an adult, Lyle was fiercely independent and a very dedicated, hard worker. Lyle remained a life long Alaskan working as a heavy equipment mechanic in Anchorage for Reynolds Equipment and Craig Taylor. He later worked for Red Carlos at Carlos Contracting in Eagle River.
Lyle also owned H&J Services based in Chugiak. He had a unique opportunity to move his family to Hawaii for a year in the late 1980’s, where he worked for Ted Nielson. Upon his return to Alaska, Lyle moved to Seward where he spent over 20 years working for Al Schaefer at Afognak Construction.
Lyle’s son LeRoy has very fond memories spending summers in Seward with his Dad while growing up, 4-wheeling and being outdoors. They spent one summer living on a houseboat in Ketchikan, which they both enjoyed greatly. After his retirement, Lyle was ready to be closer to family.
His daughter Amanda helped her Dad find a nice place in Sutton where he could relax. Amanda is so thankful for the time she had with her dad over the past year, bringing him things for his apartment and visiting with him. After some health problems in 2017 and early 2018, Lyle hired Pam Lanham to help him with chores, grocery shopping and appointments.
Pam was a committed caretaker and became a trustworthy friend. Lyle appreciated Pam very much, as does his family. Lyle was a Norwegian through and through.
He enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, taking his children on glacier tours based out of Seward, watching wildlife, reading and going on drives. He could often be found playing solitaire at the kitchen table in the early hours of the morning before work. He made the best burgers on the BBQ grill.
He appreciated having homemade foods, especially raspberry jam made by his son-n-law Ken and treats that Pam brought over. Lyle enjoyed chatting with his son and daughter-n-law Sandi. He often sought Sandi’s expertise on health issues.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother Vernon Johnson, his daughter Amanda Andraschko (Ken) and his son LeRoy Johnson (Sandi). He has five grandchildren Novalie Johnson, Lyle Johnson, Jonah Shearer, Elias Shearer and Daniel Andraschko.
Lyle loved and was loved. He will be missed by all of those that knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite charity to which he donated often: Toys for Tots at www.
