Samuel’s Obituary Samuel (Sam) Cardinal was born in Freeport, IL, Jan. 9, 1938 to Anthony and Lucille (Giuffre) Cardinal. He passed away at Providence Hospital from complications of pulmonary fibrosis on Jan.

5, 2019. He graduated from Aquin High School, Freeport in 1955. An avid reader, Sam pursued further education in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Having lived in the Midwest through his 20s, Sam then followed his sense of adventure, by first visiting the Pacific coast in 1967. Then decided to move to Alaska in 1968. Eventually, he joined the Anchorage postal service and enjoyed his work as a mailman until retirement in 1999.

A lifelong learner, Sam renewed his love of plants and became a grower of orchids, roses and other tropical plants. He also enjoyed collecting and working with various rocks, and minerals, and other aspects of lapidary work. Sam is survived by: his sister Marguerite (Mara) Cardinal-Rohde in Wisconsin, brothers-in-law, Steve Rohde and Art Fazio, five nephews, 3 nieces and 13 great nieces and nephews, as well as many dear and true Alaska friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Phyllis (Cardinal) Fazio, and a brother, Edward A.Cardinal.
