Obituary of Margaret Gerwitz Margaret F. Gerwitz, 96, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, after a brief illness. She was born August 11, 1922, in Kirkville, the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Schaff Ferstler. She was a graduate of Minoa High School and CCBI in 1941.

For 15 years, Mrs. Gerwitz was employed with Crouse Hinds Co She later worked for 17 years with Equifax Services, retiring in 1990. She was a member of DeWitt Community Church and was a volunteer with the church Suburban Shop.

She was also a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Home Health Care Agency for over 10 years. Margaret loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed camping, traveling, dancing, gardening and many lively summers at her camp on Cross Lake.

Margaret could whip up a delicious meal on a moment’s notice. She was an avid reader, New York Yankees fan, SU basketball fan and enjoyed keeping records of their stats. Throughout her life she loved crocheting, be it a baby blanket or a lap robe for the VA Hospital.

She also played a mean harmonica. Surviving are five children and their spouses, Karen L. Porter and Rex Olson of Wellsville, Lisa A. and Daniel E. Dennis of North Syracuse, Bonnie L. and Warren McSpadden of Warners, Maria P. and Michael Muldoon of Fishkill and James M. and Lynn Porter of Liverpool; twelve grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great granddaughter; five step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard L. Gerwitz in 2004; four sisters, Bertha O’Brien, Edna Isett and Marion Irving; and one brother, Raymond Ferstler.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 AM at DeWitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt. Calling hours will be Saturday from 9-10:45 AM, at the church, prior to the service. Interment will follow in DeWitt Cemetery.

The family expresses their deepest gratitude to her loving caregivers at Buckley Landing, where she resided for the past six years. In memory of Mrs. Gerwitz, contributions can be made to DeWitt Community Church. Arrangements are with Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
