Marilyn Thayer Cote April 04, 1938 – December 13, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Marilyn Thayer Cote, age 80, a well-known and respected member of the Purcellville community, died peacefully at her home on December 13 in the loving care of her family and Capital Caring Hospice. She was the beloved wife of Robert R. Cote, and had celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past June 20th. Marilyn was born April 4, 1938 in Providence, RI, as one of six children of the late Walter R. Thayer Jr, and Esther (Hulme) Thayer, and was raised in Riverside, RI.

After graduating high school from St. Mary’s Academy, Marilyn earned her certification as a registered nurse from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. In her youth, Marilyn summered at Dollycoppe in the NH mountains and in later years at the family cottage on Block Island, RI. Marilyn was fondly known as Merry for her good humor and ability to look for the silver lining in any challenge.

She charmed friends and strangers alike with her one-cheek dimple and her practical, unpretentious approach to life. In the early years of their marriage Bob and Merry lived in most of the New England states as well as Elizabethtown KY and Malborough CT, before settling in Purcellville VA in 1979. Marilyn was a devout Catholic who attended daily mass at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

For the past twenty years, Bob and Merry spent winters in Florida and made wonderful friends in the Melody Gardens community and at Holy Cross Catholic Church in St. Petersburg. Marilyn is survived by her husband Bob and six children: Theresa Murphy, Robert W. Cote, Mary (Clifford) Coggin, Michael (Lorri) Cote, Tina (Robert Smith) Cote and Rebecca Cote and seventeen grandchildren: Kelly Murphy, Scott Cote, Laura Cote, Christopher Coggin, Cory Coggin, Cote Coggin, Jennifer Cote, Heather Cote, Ethan Cote, Emma Cote, Hunter Almond, Chase Shiring, MacKenzie Yeatts, Aideendale Yeatts, Kayla Smith, Taryn Smith and Thayer Cote Smith, and great grandchild Owen Murphy. Merry is also survived by two brothers and a sister: Walter R. Thayer III, M.D. of RI, Alan Thayer and his wife Mary Ellen of WA; and Barbara Monaghan and her husband David of RI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Nancy Meehan, brother Dale Thayer, son-in-law Thomas Murphy and a beloved son Roger. A memorial mass celebrating Marilyn’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2019 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 37730 St. Francis Court Purcellville, VA 20132. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Marilyn’s memory be made to your own favorite charity—Marilyn supported so many causes, she would want you to direct your kindness to wherever you felt it would do the most good.
