John Thomas Johnson, Jr. March 27, 1933 – January 18, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card On Friday Jan 18, 2019 John Thomas Johnson, Jr. passed away at Hilltop House in Winchester, VA, where he resided with his wife of 63 years, Mary Johnson. Born on March 27, 1933 in Portsmouth, VA to John Thomas Johnson Sr. and Ethel Doris Clark, “Tom,” (as many knew him) is survived by his sons: Bryan (and wife Michelle) and Thomas (wife Karen). He is the last remaining sibling of his brother Carl and two sisters, Jean and Nancy, who inspired his love of dance; he regularly mentioned how they would push the couches to the walls and swing dance in the living room with friends.

Tom was the grandfather of six very loved grandchildren: Amy, Tim, Chris, Suzy, Matthew, and Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Lucas, Samuel, and Aiden. After completing a year of college, he was drafted in the Korean War where he served for 3 years as a specialist in Radio/Morse code Interception. Shortly after his return, Tom and Mary were married in 1956 at Providence Baptist Church in McLean, VA.

He became a design engineer for DECO/ Defense Electronics Corporation which was bought by Westinghouse Defense and Space. This later became part of Northrop-Grumman Corporation in Baltimore. During his career, Tom’s work focused on Defense Department radar testing equipment.

An intelligent and kind man, Tom had a passion for his faith in Jesus and sharing that with others, singing in the church choir, working outside, dancing, playing cards, ice cream, and family. His love of music and swing dance were passed to his children and grandchildren. He could still be found dancing in the halls with nurses at his assisted living facility.

A visitation and memorial service will take place beginning at 10am on Saturday January 26, 2019, Service will begin at 11:00 at Hamilton Baptist Church, Hamilton, VA where Tom and Mary attended for over 30 years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hamilton Baptist Church, memo: Tom Johnson/ missions.
