FREEDOM Mary Ruth Ray, 84 years of age, became Our Gift to God on Wednesday May 2, 2018 at her residence. Mrs. Ray was God’s Gift to Us on September 4, 1933 in Eupora, Mississippi, the daughter of the late James B. and Ressabelle (Temple) Johnston, Sr. Following her early years in Mississippi, she enrolled at Blue Mountain College where she earned her BA,and then her MA at the University of North Carolina. A resident of the Freedom area the past 48 years, Mrs. Ray had been employed for 14 years in the office of Dr. Janet Kearney in Hiram.

A faithful member of The First Baptist Church of Garrettsville since 1972, she taught Adult Sunday School and VBS, oversaw the food cupboard ministry, and was a mentor and friend to many. Those who will mourn her passing will forever remember that her life and her hope were centered on her faith in Jesus Christ. On June 8, 1958, she married her beloved husband James Allen Ray who preceded her in death on March 29, 2009.

She also was preceded by her brother James B. Johnston, Jr Mrs. Ray is survived by her devoted children James Edward (Cyndy) Ray of Indianapolis, Indiana, Allen Bruce (Shin-Young) Ray of Chuncheon, South Korea and John David (Audrey) Ray of Newbury, Ohio; her loving grandchildren Ian, Morgan, Lo, Nathan, Caleb, and Stephanie. Her dear sister Martha Schweizer of Memphis, Tennessee also survives.

Calling hours will be Sunday May 6, 2018 at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service, 4668 Pioneer Trail at the corner of St.Rt. 44, Mantua, Ohio 44255 from 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. Funeral services for Mrs. Ray will be Monday May 7, 2018 at The First Baptist Church of Garrettsville, 7656 St. Rt. 82, Garrettsville, Ohio 44231 at 11:00 A.M. where visitation will also be held from 10:00 A.M. until service time.

Officiating will be her son Pastor David Ray, assisted by Pastor David Gray. A luncheon will immediately follow at the church. Final resting place will be at The Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
