Miss Maureen Rachelle McDonough died peacefully in ManorCare Health Services-North Hills, Ross Township on May 31, 2018 at the age of 62. Maureen was preceded in death by her Father, Patrick J. McDonough MD and her Mother, Marian G. McDonough, both of Pittsburgh, PA, and is survived by her siblings, Diana M. Baseman of South Orange, NJ, Muriel C. McDonough, of Morgantown, WV, David F. McDonough of Austin, TX, and Daniel J. McDonough of Cheswick, PA, and many loving friends, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Maureen was born on November 26, 1955 in Pittsburgh, PA to Patrick and Marian.
She graduated from Shaler Area High School in 1973, attended the University of Pittsburgh until 1975, transferred to Grand Valley State College (now University) where she graduated in 1977 with two Bachelor of Philosophy degrees in Women’s Studies and Psychology. She also worked for Planned Parenthood on unexpected pregnancies. Then she moved to San Diego, CA to study and work, earning a Master’s degree in Social Work from San Diego State University in 1983.
In San Diego, Maureen worked for the Marine Corps Recruiting Center as a Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Counselor. Although Maureen was a small woman, she was not shy around the vigorous, young, jaded recruits. She gave them good advice without fear.
If she was ever mocked or harassed by these tough young men, she could count on the protection of the others in her classes. Another of her tough assignments was visiting homes where child abuse was suspected. She had to decide on-the-fly whether a child was in imminent danger and whether or not to remove the child.
She also worked on alcohol interventions during this time. In 1991, no longer able to work through disability, she moved back to Pittsburgh permanently. Family will receive friends Friday June 8, 2018 from 6-8 PM in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, where funeral services will be held Saturday June 9, 2018 at 10 AM, with the Rev.
Paul Becker, officiating. Burial will follow in Bakerstown Cemetery, Richland Township. Following the burial all are welcome to attend and celebrate Maureen’s life at a reception at Atria’s on William Penn Highway, Richland.
Condolences can be sent to David McDonough 7102 Anaqua Drive Austin, TX 78750. The family would like to thank Maureen’s dear friend Sue Tomaszewski for all that she did before and during Maureen’s ordeal. We would also like to thank Maureen’s caregivers and the Manor Care and St. Margaret’s Hospital staffs for their care and dedication.
