Born March 5, 1941 to the late Willie O. Strane and Densel D. Strane, he is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Veronica Friend Strane; his son, Melvin D. Strane, Jr. (Carissa); two grandchildren, Charlotte A. B. Strane and Miles R. Strane; his brother, Clinton A. Strane (Gwendolyn); sister-in-law, Maureen Clark; three nephews, Howard H. Moore III (Tracy), Christopher Strane and Michael Strane; great nieces and nephews, Crystal Strane, Catherine Moore, Christopher Strane, Jr., Celeste Moore, Mikayla S. Strane, and Akayla J. Polite and a host of loving friends and family. Mr. Strane was a 1959 graduate of Maggie Walker High School and received a Degree in Electronics in 1965 from Virginia State University.
In 1999 he retired from Sears after 34 years of devoted service. He enjoyed volunteering as an Assistant Webelos Scout Leader as well as other capacities with Pack 459 of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
He was a longstanding member of Moore Street Baptist Church and regularly attended First Baptist Church Centralia for many years. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at the VA Cancer Institute and Kindred Hospice for their loving care of Melvin over the last several months. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church Centralia, 2920 Kingsdale Road, Richmond, Virginia 23237, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to service.
