Neil Kenneth Gehret SEPTEMBER 26, 1921 – APRIL 25, 2018 Orange Park, Florida – Neil Kenneth Gehret, 96, a long-time resident of Florida, most recently in Jacksonville, passed peacefully Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Orange Park Medical Center. Preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Prendergast Gehret, he is survived by their seven children: Ed Gehret (Mary Pat), Rick Gehret (Elaine), Louise Gehret, Steve Gehret (Margaret), Bob Gehret (Betsy), Tom Gehret (Nancy), and Mary Anne Briggs (Dan); 14 grand-children, 3 step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren, Judy Shupp (his niece) and Diane Salak, his dear friend. Neil was born on September 26, 1921 in Reading, PA.

He attended McCann School of Business and University of Pennsylvania, Extension School Accounts and Finance. He entered the Army on January 7, 1944 and married Betty on January 14, 1944. Neil served in the Army Air Corp as a First Lieutenant, while Betty served in the Navy.

As a member of the 8th Army Air Corp, 91st Bomb Group (H), 401st Squadron, Neil piloted his B-17 on 35 successful missions out of Bassingbourn, England. After the war, Neil returned to civilian life as an accountant in Reading, Pennsylvania. Neil and Betty moved to Miami and later relocated to Jacksonville.

Neil was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather known best for his devotion to his family and his faith. A long-time member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Neil served as a member of the Rosary group, Bereavement Committee, and Young at Heart group. Neil was very active earlier in his life on the golf course and tennis courts.

In later life Neil was a dedicated reader and loved spending time with his family. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April, 28, 2018 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church followed by burial service with military honors at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. A viewing will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 pm on Friday, April 27, 2018 at the funeral home at Jacksonville Memory Gardens.
