Norman V. Thompson Kearney Resident Norman V. Thompson, 87, of Kearney, passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at CHI Health-Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2018 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. Pastor Dean Pofahl will be officiating.

Interment will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska. Military honors will be provided by the North Platte Honors Team in conjunction with the Nebraska National Guard. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home.

Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services. Norman Valentine Thompson was born on July 12, 1931 in Allen, Nebraska to Philo and Gladys M. (Penlerick) Thompson. He received his education from Allen High School graduating with the class of 1951.

Following his education, Norman enlisted in the United States Army in 1952. He served his country in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. Norman was united in marriage to Maxine Voss on November 24, 1954 in Ainsworth, Nebraska and to this union four children were born: Susan, Sharon, Sandra and Shelly.

Norman and Maxine lived in Ainsworth and traveled around due to his construction job until 1961, when they moved to the Shelton/Gibbon area until 1993. In 1993, the couple made their home in Kearney. Norman enjoyed collecting lamps, lanterns and clocks.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Maxine Thompson of Kearney; his daughters, Susan Tillemans and her husband, Cliff of Gibbon, Nebraska, Sharon Thompson of Kearney, Nebraska, Sandra Erickson and her husband, Michael of North Platte, Nebraska, and Shelly Thompson of Kearney, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Ross Thompson and his wife, Bonnie of Sidney, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Jean Thompson of Fremont, Nebraska and Janet Thompson of Wilber, Nebraska; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Norman was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael Thompson, Manuel Thompson, Merlyn Thompson, Patrick Thompson and his wife, Sandy; sisters, Betty Miner and Edith Taylor and her husband, Bill; and two infant brothers.
