Obituary of Owen Kiniry Owen Kiniry, 92, a lifetime Rhinebeck resident, died peacefully on September 20, 2018 at home, surrounded by friends, family, caregivers and his best friend, his yellow Labrador retriever, Gunner. Born in Ilion, NY on September 19, 1926, he was the son of Owen Sr. and Amelia Kiniry. Owen moved to Rhinebeck at age 6 and attended school there.

Upon completion of High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the height of World War II, at the age of 17. He served our country in the South Pacific Theater with the 4th Marine Division from 1944-1946 in a rifle platoon. Owen, even in his last days, always stated he had “never served with a better bunch of men”.

He was proud of his service to our nation as a U.S. Marine. Upon discharge from the Marine Corps, Owen guided Moose and Deer hunters in Quebec. He then took a truck-driving job with C & E Milk transport Co. from 1948-1964.

Next he went to work for Heywood Brothers excavating in Rhinecliff from 1965-1972. Owen moved on with Dave Alexander Sand and Gravel of Poughkeepsie from 1973-1993. His next excavating job took him to Jeff Decker and Son in Rhinebeck, where Owen ran the loader and gravel plant from 1994-2008.

It appeared Owen would retire at this point, but he had other plans. He worked with Gottlieb Management, where he did maintenance and ran machinery on their properties throughout the Northern Dutchess area, until July of 2018. Owen will always be remembered for his wit, humor, his hard work ethic and his love of bird hunting and bird dogs.

Owen is survived by his sons and their spouses, Rex Kiniry and Kathy of Saugerties, Kim Kiniry and Gina of Saugerties, Scott Kiniry and Tanna of Millbrook, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. Owen leaves behind numerous close friends. He was pre-deceased by his Sister Katherine and his youngest son, Chad.

Owen was a life member of the NRA, Red Hook VFW Post 7765, Montgomery Post 429 -American Legion in Rhinebeck, Ducks Unlimited and The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. A celebration of Owen’s life will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 3p-7pm at the Red Hook VFW Hall, 30 Elizabeth Street, Red Hook, NY 12571.
