Obituary for Patricia Kay Wilson On November 15, 2018, Patricia Kay Wilson, of McCutchanville, Indiana and Naples, Florida, sewed her last stitch in the beautiful quilt of life that she created for herself on God’s Earth. A loving wife and mother and a friend to all she met, Pat’s quilt of life was filled with the vibrant colors of community and adventure, the warmth of close friendships, and, most of all, with the joyous and happy times she spent with her husband and family. Born on January 19, 1948, to James R. and Margaret Jackson, Pat spent her youth in the small southern Indiana town of Pleasantville, Indiana, where she attended the Pleasantville United Methodist Church and was raised in a loving family.
In an era when “if you didn’t have it, you made it,” and as a member of 4-H, “Little Patty” learned skills that would accompany her through life: music, sewing, quilting, cooking, and using her creative mind. The spirit and persistence of the Held family from Freelandville was a strong influence in her upbringing and many afternoons were spent in the kitchen at the apron of her Grandma Held. Pat found her life-long love and husband, Stephen Don Wilson, in the halls of Pleasantville High School and journeyed with him as he pursued his degree in Veterinary Medicine.
They settled in Vincennes, where they raised two sons. Pat was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an active part of the Knox County community, volunteering her time at several civic organizations. Pat worked in the Vincennes Veterinary Clinic, taught elementary school at North Knox elementary, owned a book store on Main Street, earned her Master’s Degree in education and a Masters of Social Work Degree, and was a full time professor of Social Work at Vincennes University.
She took a particular interest in clinical teaching and in guiding her students to enter the workforce, and she was an integral part of starting the distance education curriculums at Vincennes University When it was finally time to retire, there was no easy chair in the picture. Pat volunteered with the Women’s Club and attended the Aldersgate Methodist Church. Whether it was traveling to Africa or the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, taking the RV to the Rocky Mountains or to spend the winters in sunny Florida, or spending time at a family reunion, playing cards, or visiting friends, Pat and Steve lived their golden years together with a youthful passion to enjoy life and each other.
Central to these years were countless hours spent with the grandkids and great grandkids; soccer and basketball games, school plays, arts & crafts, zip lining, trips to Holiday World, making cookies. There was nothing too big or too silly when it came to Pat’s family. The only thing that came close to Pat’s passion for her husband and family was her passion for sewing and quilting.
Often working on a quilting rack passed down from the generation before her, Pat spent 60 years turning fabric and yarn and thread into wonderful creations that adorn the beds, couches, and bodies of so many recipients of the gifts of her labors. Along the way, she bonded together wonderful friendships with her special “Stitcher Sisters”. Pat filled her 70 years with all the good that life had to offer and shared as much love with others as she could.
With a positive attitude and an engaging wit, she embraced the challenges of life and tried her best to turn any lemons into lemonade. In the end, she wrapped herself in her quilt of life and departed to spend eternity with the family and friends that preceded her in death in the Heavenly Kingdom of Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. Pat is survived by: her husband; her brother, Jim Jackson, of Linton, Indiana; two sons, Stephen Douglas Wilson of Lascassas, Tennessee, and Stephen Rob Wilson of Bloomington, Indiana; four grandchildren – Elyse Harper, Garrett Wilson, Eli Wilson, and Noah Wilson; and three great grandchildren – Isaac Wilson, Brooklyn Harper, and Emersyn Harper.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at Aldersgate Methodist Church, 5130 Lincoln, Avenue, Evansville, Indiana, with informal visitation and a fellowship meal immediately afterwards.
