Obituary for Pearl Marie “Mammy” Cottier Pearl Marie Cottier was born March 21, 1937 in Pine Ridge, SD to Gilbert and Mable (Schweigman) Cottier. She made her final journey on December 6, 2018 in Martin, SD. She married Bill Clausen on December 21, 1954.
To this union they were blessed with seven children. Gilbert, Jesse, Kimmie, Virgil, Keeley, Shad, and Keena. They also raised Wauneta and Devona Lone Wolf, Mable and Cleveland Dubray, Natalie and Billy Siers, Timothy Dubray, and Ernie Libby.
Bill passed away on September 29, 1972. Pearl married Dean Bettelyoun on Feburary 14, 1979. During this time she raised Ashley and Eric Cottier.
Dean passed away December 24, 2001. Pearl’s first home was north of Allen in Yellow Bear. Where she rode horse in the canyons and helped her dad with the ranch.
She moved to Martin when she was 13 years old and this is when she started working. She held numerous jobs beginning with waitressing, cooking, administrator, bar tender and owner, U.S. Marshall, heavy equipment repair shop owner and mechanic, educator, and director of the LaCreek College Center for 37 years. She attended Brainerd Boarding School in Hot Springs, SD.
She also attended college in Brookings, SD, Vermillion, SD, Sinte Gleska University in Mission, SD and finally Oglala Lakota College. Pearl has a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Services and Associates of Arts (AA) degrees in Business, Lakota Studies, Counseling and General Studies. She also has a numerous graduate credits.
She also sat on numerous boards. She was the treasurer for the LaCreek District, personal board, gaming commission, health board and the Wild Horse Butte CDC. She was instrumental on getting the IHS clinic in Martin, SD along with the East Winds Casino.
One of her favorite sayings was, “Always get your education because, that is one thing that no one can’t ever take away from you”. Pearl was a classy lady, although she swore like a sailor. She’s best known as, “Mammy”.
She never left her house without her make up or hair done and dressed to the 9’s. Even if it was just to mow her lawn. She left a lasting impression on those that knew her and left a void that no one can fill.
She is survived by her sister, Georgina Blue Bird; children, Devona Lone Wolf, Jesse (Carol) Clausen, Kimmie Clausen, Virgil Clausen, Keeley Clausen, Shad Clausen, Keena Clausen, Sonie K. Wilson, David Pauly, Natalie Siers and Family, Bill Siers and Family, Ernie Libby and Family and Eric Cottier and Family; Grandchildren, Ashley Cottier, Stormie (Aaron) Risse, Chance (Stephanie) Clausen, Shadow Blue (Bobbi) Jensen, Sky Rose Kamerzell, Roby Standing Bear, Yonasda Lone Wolf, Julio McCall, Tashina and Chante Jackson, Michael and Jeffery Whirlwind Horse and Ryan Butcher; and Great-Grandchildren, Preston Rosane, Hayden Risse, Daysen Jensen, Lily Hunger, Emmie Risse, Charlotte Clausen, Maya, Jordon and Thunder Jackson, Shayla Lone Wolf, Dulce and ZaRayah Whirlwind Horse, Harlem and Prince McCall, Chryon Lone Wolf-Muhammad, Shamar Hill. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Gilbert and Mable Cottier; Husbands, Bill Claussen and Dean Bettelyoun; Sons, Gilbert Cottier and Cleveland Dubray; Daughters, Wauneta Lone Wolf and Mabel DuBray; Sisters, Beatrica (Bea), Erma, Emogene, Ampering (PeeWee), Rachel, Rebecca, and Vivinna; and Brothers, Gilbert and Joe. Pallbearers will be: Frank Marshall, Bob Claussen, E.G. Ward, Gus Yellow Hair, Tony Fresquez and Craig Dillon.
