Raymond John Schneider, Jr. June 04, 1942 – January 28, 2019 Share this obituary View/Sign Guest Book Raymond John Schneider, Jr. 76, of Woodstock, VA passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 at his residence. A funeral mass for Mr. Schneider will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2019 at St. John Bosco Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Dobbins officiating.

Burial will follow in the Massanutten Cemetery, Woodstock, VA. Mr. Schneider was born in California a son of the late Rear Admiral Raymond John Schneider and the late Margaret Grace Croke Schneider. He was the oldest of 10 children in a family that moved many times because of his father’s naval career.

He graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. class of 1960. He was a U.S. Army veteran and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia; a Master’s degree in Engineering Science from Penn State University King of Prussia Campus, three credits shy of a Masters degree in Physics from Drexel University and a PhD in Information Technology from George Mason University. He was also a licensed professional engineer in the state of Virginia.

The first of his four careers began in Warminster, Pennsylvania at the Naval Air Development Center where he worked as a civilian researcher in anti-submarine warfare for 15 years. Sperry Defense Systems Division lured him to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where he worked for 11 years before moving to the Washington D.C. area in Northern Virginia. Then he took a position as Director of Engineering for ComSonics, Inc., in Harrisonburg, occasionally teaching at James Madison University as adjunct faculty in the evenings.

After his finished his doctoral thesis Dr Schneider worked for a year as a visiting professor there. Bridgewater College is where he ended his teaching career as Emeritus. He had many interests and was well known in G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis Circles.

The Shroud of Turin (the burial cloth of Jesus) was another interest. He was involved with the Shroud Science Group, comprised of more than 100 scientists around the world. He is published on the Shroud and gave a course in Harrisonburg twice through the Life Long Learning Institute associated with James Madison University.

Shroud University.com hosts his slides and lecture. Over the years he attended conferences and gave lectures on the Shroud many times. He also taught a course this past year on C.S. Lewis for the Life Long Learning Institute.

Dr Schneider was planning on giving a course on G.K. Chesterton this coming Spring. He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Jessica Lynn Wright Schneider, whom he married on April 19, 1969; their four children, Raymond, Ann Marie, Stephen, and Christopher along with their spouses, Melanie, Paul, Tina; 14 grandchildren along with his siblings, Jeanne Marie Wilhelm, Mary Ann Kreitzer, Margaret Schneider, Carol Schneider, Susan Bigelow, Laura Schneider and Robert Schneider. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Thomas Schneider and John Schneider.

The family will receive friends at St. John Bosco Catholic Church this Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon on Saturday, February 2, 2019.
