Richard Alexander Nebeker Jr October 15, 1954 – January 02, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Richard Alexander Nebeker Jr. passed away peacefully on January 2, 2019, at Washington Odd Fellows Home in Walla Walla, following months of dealing with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Rick was born on October I5, 1954, in LaGrande, Oregon to Alice Nebeker (Reithmayr) and Richard Alexander Nebeker Sr He moved to Walla Walla in 1963 with his mother and sister, and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1973.

He earned a BA in Education from the University of Washington in 1977, followed by a Master’s degree from Lewis and Clark College in 1989. Rick began a long career in education with Walla Walla School District # 140, teaching 2nd through 6th grades at Prospect Point he also taught at Sharpstein School. He served as Principal at Edison Elementary School from 1990-1993, and at Prospect Point until his retirement in 2008.

He served as President of the Washington State School Retiree’s Association 2016-2017, and was a member of the Walla Walla/Columbia School Retirees’ Association. He also worked as a college instructor for Washington State University, and other institutions providing education to future teachers. Rick loved to travel, and visited many places including Russia, Europe, Arizona, and the Oregon Coast.

He is survived by his mother, Alice Reithmayr; sister, Vickie Erickson; two step-brothers, Kurt Reithmayr Jr, and Ken Reithmayr; three step-sisters, Jeanne Reithmayr Nate, Mary Reithmayr, and Nan Reithmayr-Parent; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Preceded in death by his father, maternal and paternal grandparents, and step-father, Kurt Reithmayr. Rick leaves behind a legacy of service that we all can admire.

He was kind, diligent, bright, organized and helpful. He will be sorely missed. Memorial service is planned for January 12, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home in Walla Walla, WA.
