Obituary for Richard Coles Armistead NILES – Richard Coles Armistead, 69, passed away in his sleep on Thursday afternoon, October 18, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Warren, Ohio on June 1, 1949 the son of Charles Emmett and Dorothy (Fluharty) Armistead. He grew up in Chardon, Ohio and moved to the Niles area after High School.

Richard is a Vietnam Veteran whom honorably served in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division and received many honors including the Vietnam Service Campaign Medal. He was active in Veteran’s Organizations, being a life member and past Commander of the VFW, Niles and Girard American Legions and the Niles Army and Navy Garrison 252 where he also served as Captain of their Honor Guard detail. He graduated from the Ohio State Fire Academy and started a dignified career with many years of service as a fireman, EMT and instructor for firefighter and HazMat certifications.

He was one of the founders of the Trumbull County HazMat, president of Industrial Hazardous Materials Incorporated and was a also a member of the Trumbull County Fire Association, Department of Homeland Security and the Mineral Ridge Volunteer Fire Department where he served as a lieutenant. Richard was a LaBrae High School “Band-Dad” and chaperoned many of their band trips. He coached Mineral Ridge little league football and was a founder of the Lakeview Little Bulldogs.

He loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing but his most favorite thing in the world was spending time with his family, kids and especially grandkids! He believed in family first and lived his life accordingly, feeling blessed. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Shirlie (Lowe) Armistead whom he married June 26, 1971; two daughters, Amy Morrison, Amber (James) Brown; two grandchildren, Addison and Colton all of Niles; nieces, nephews, many friends and his dog, Gigi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, William, James, Donald Armistead and a sister, Barbara. The Funeral will be Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Rev. Debbie Dockstader will officiate. Burial with Military Honors by the Girard American Legion will be at Kerr Cemetery.
