Obituary for Richard Francis Nute Richard Francis Nute passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, September 5, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. Richard was born April 24, 1938 in Lake City, MN to John C. and Vera B. Nute. In 1940 the family moved to Red Wing, where he attended Washington Elementary School and grew up as a downtown resident.

As a young man, he began his lifelong interest in taking walks around the commercial district and observing the evolution of city businesses and storefronts. He ultimately became a very knowledgeable historian about downtown Red Wing. After graduating from Central High School in 1956, his family moved to Hastings in 1958.

Richard worked for a number of automotive service stations as a teenager both in Red Wing and later in Hastings. He joined the Army in 1961, completed basic training at Fort Ord in Salinas, California and was then released for his remaining military commitment with the Army National Guard of Minnesota. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1968.

Richard began full-time employment with Behrens Auto Supply Company of Red Wing in 1961. His career with Behrens Auto Supply and later Behrens Supply Company represented a continuous span of 57 years. By colleagues close to him in the supply chain industry, he was addressed as “Nute”.

His surname universally became his nickname. The Nute family returned to Red Wing from Hastings in 1972. He lived with his parents and cared for them until their passing.

Richard’s personal interests included gardening, woodworking, photography and country music. However, his cherished activity throughout life was in acquiring and driving new vehicles. He was commonly seen walking downtown and certainly known by all who saw him as a friendly, “genuine nice guy”.

Respected by all with whom he had an association, he was especially enjoyed by those who served him for many years at local restaurants. He lived his entire life as a private, single gentleman. He is survived by his close Behrens Family friends, his Robinson Family neighbors and all those in the community who had the joy of his acquaintance.

Visitation and a gathering of friends will be at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel on Wednesday, September 12, at 5:00 pm with a prayer service at 6:00 pm.
