Obituary for Mrs. Esther G Johnson Esther G. Johnson, age 100, of Wanamingo, died on October 18, 2018 at the Kenyon Sunset Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before the service on Saturday.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements were made with Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota. Esther Gertrude Clark was born on June 10, 1918 and raised in Dodge County.

She was the second child of six born to Carl and Katherine Clark. In 1940 she married LuVerne Johnson and they lived most of their lives in Wanamingo where they had a blacksmith shop for over 40 years. Esther also worked at a grocery store in Wanamingo for many years.

Esther raised five sons, attending their sporting events, concerts, plays and other school activities. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Wanamingo Senior Citizens and VFW Auxiliary. She volunteered often, serving as Cub Scout Den Mother, selling VFW Buddy Poppies and supporting school events.

She and LuVerne lived in the same house in Wanamingo for 47 years before becoming some of the first residents to move to the Heritage Hills senior apartments. They enjoyed participating in many card games and gathering daily for coffee. Esther particularly looked forward to hosting her extended family gatherings in the community room.

After LuVerne’s death in 2001, Esther continued to live in her apartment until 2015, at the age of 97, she made the move to assisted living at Twin Rivers in Cannon Falls. She made new friends there but was disappointed that they couldn’t get enough interest to start a regular Rook card game. In 2017 Esther was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, she moved to the Kenyon Sunset Home with care from Heartland Hospice.

She was always cheerful and mentally sharp until the end although she was frustrated as her hearing failed in her later years. The staffs at Kenyon Sunset Home and Heartland Hospice were immensely helpful and made her life more comfortable. Esther is survived by her sons, Gene (Sandy) of Corydon, IN, Gary (Nancy) of Farmington, Ron (Marlene) of Maple Grove, Al (Jolene) of Blaine and Gayle (Yvonne) of Alameda, CA; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
