Richard’s Obituary Richard L. “Dick” Bannon, age 92 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following a brief illness. He was born August 4, 1926 in Elwood, the son of Herman W. and Mabel I. (Foxworthy) Bannon. He was a 1944 graduate of Elwood High School.

After high school, Richard proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and he remained in the Naval Reserve until 1954. He went on to work at Continental Can Corporation as a Shipping Supervisor for over 30 years until his retirement in 1977. Richard married the love of his life, Wilma Jean Legg, on April 15, 1950, and they shared more than 49 years of marriage together before her passing on August 23, 1999.

He was a longtime, faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood. Richard was also a life member of the Elwood Elks #368 where he enjoyed playing pool with friends and the Quincy Masonic Lodge #230 in Elwood. He especially enjoyed playing Euchre and reading books of all kinds.

Richard’s family includes his daughter, Mary Lynn (husband Jack) Kinney of Westfield; brother, Reed (wife Virginia) Bannon of Elwood; sister-in-law, Sara (husband Ron) Gallatin of Elwood; lifelong friend, Virginia Carpenter of Elwood; 3 grandchildren, Kyle (wife Carrie) Sherman, Geoff (wife Karen) Sherman, and Merrit (husband Bryan) Sacks; 4 great-grandchildren, Jack, Victor, Sarah, and Sadie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 1999; daughter, Sarah Lee Sherman in 2011; 2 brothers, Frank Bannon and Morris Bannon; and sister, Mary Etchison. A funeral service honoring Richard’s life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev.

Doug Bohall of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery and include military honors by the U.S. Navy and Elwood V.F.W. honor guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
