A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown for Robert “Bob” Scahill, 85, who passed away on June 1, 2018, after a brief illness. Bob was born on May 19, 1933, the youngest of five children of John and Marie (McCann) Scahill. He graduated in 1951 from East High School in Youngstown, Ohio and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving his country proudly as an airplane mechanic during the Korean War.
He worked at Wean United and retired from the Youngstown Vindicator as a district manager. On Sept. 14, 1963, he married Germaine (Vimmerstedt) at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown, and together they raised their only son, Paul, in New Middletown.
He was a charter member of the Mahoning Gaelic Society, and served as president for one year. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, and a masterful storyteller who enjoyed regaling family and friends with tales of his time in the Air Force while stationed in Florida and French Morocco. He was a faithful member of the Catholic Church, and enjoyed being a “pincher” on the pierogies-making crew at St. Paul’s Church.
For several years, he and Germaine had “reserved” seats in the back row of the church during weekly Mass. Bob was an avid sports fan, and could always be found in the stands cheering on his son Paul as he played football, basketball and baseball at Springfield Local High School. He was a long-suffering fan of the Cleveland Browns, and he couldn’t stand the Steelers.
He was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians, Ohio State University Buckeyes and Notre Dame. He kept busy working crossword puzzles with his wife, keeping up with family and friends on Facebook, and playing games on his computer. He also enjoyed baking apple pies, pumpkin pies and zucchini muffins.
One of the biggest joys in life was his only grandson, Nick. They were “partners-in-mischief” and often engaged in epic sword fights and squirt gun battles. Bob will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife; his sister, Agnes Mastronarde, his brothers Joseph, Jack and Paul Scahill; niece Mary Claire Hynes and nephews, Jimmy Mastronarde, Tommy Hynes and Terry Clark. He is survived by son Paul Scahill (Eileen) and grandson Nick Scahill, of Columbus; sister-in-law Betty Scahill; along with 8 nieces and 14 nephews. The family would like thank Dr. Nick Proia and the nurses at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boardman, especially Mindy and Terri in ICU and Elaine on 6 East, and the staff at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, for the tender loving care they gave to Bob.
The family also thanks his wonderful friends Jim and Helen Parry, and especially Nancy Kennedy, who selflessly became Bob’s primary caregiver in the years since his wife passed away, and truly was his own personal “guardian angel”. Monday, June 4, at Clemente Funeral Home, 10170 Main St., New Middletown and 9:00 to 9:45 am Tuesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 10143 Main St., New Middletown, immediately preceding the funeral Mass.
Private burial at Zion Cemetery in New Middletown. Charitable contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to St. Paul the Apostle Church.
