Robert J. Dekker, 97 of Cedar Grove passed away Friday morning June 22, 2018 at Cedar Grove Gardens. Robert was born on February 27, 1921 in Hingham a son to the late John and Beatrice (Louret) Dekker. He attended schools in Hingham and Racine, graduating from Waldo High School.

On October 15, 1946 he was united in marriage to Rosemary Lee and she preceded him in death on December 15, 2009. He was co-owner of Wierman-Louret Inc. selling International Harvester farm machinery for 40 years. Robert was an Army WW II veteran obtaining the rank of staff sergeant serving in the Pacific and the Philippines.

He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Robert enjoyed and participated in various golf and bowling leagues. He raised horses and was especially proud of his horse “Rusty”.

Robert was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Waldo and the Higby-Oglan-Soerens American Legion Post 345, Hingham. Robert is survived by two sons, Thomas (Shirley) Dekker and Paul (Connie) Dekker both of Cedar Grove; seven grandchildren, Matthew Dekker, Jennifer (Benjie) Meerdink, Bill (Amy) Dekker, Christine (Chris) Bahr, Nicholas Dekker, Sally (Eric) Eernisse, and Sue (Travis) DeRuyter; and fifteen great grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a brother George Dekker and a sister Doris Schmidt.

A funeral service for Robert will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 29 at Trinity UMC in Waldo with Rev. Denise Kwiatkowski officiating. Burial will be in the Hingham Cemetery.

Family and friends may gather at the church, 425 Lyndon St., Waldo on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 6 p.m. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by Hartman-Lammers American Legion Post 286 Memorials in Robert’s name are preferred. Robert’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Cedar Grove Gardens and Heartland Hospice. Their kindness and comfort will be remembered.
