Robert Lee Rieck November 13, 1957 – December 24, 2018 SOUTH BEND – Robert Lee Rieck, 61, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. His Lord came for him in his sleep. Robert began his adventures with his Lord and Savior after a long illness.

Robert was born on November 13, 1957 in Michigan City, IN to his parents, the late Robert G. Rieck and Betty Jane (Poehler) Rieck. Robert was an active young man. Following his schooling, he started a lawn service which was very successful.

His partner in business was his best friend and mother until they retired. Robert’s participation in Special Olympics brought him many awards. He was involved in “A Celebration of Love” in the 1986 National Special Olympics held at the University of Notre Dame, and received many awards for his participation.

Robert sold the most Christmas Wreaths for Special Olympics with his mother and lifetime friend, Bob Polowski. This was an incredible accomplishment. His favorite sports were Olympic swimming and basketball, both of which he excelled.

He also participated in the softball throw at the National Special Olympics. His favorite pastime was watching Chicago Cubs Baseball and the Chicago Bears Football. Robert’s father formerly played for the Chicago Bears of which Robert was very proud.

Robert loved his family. His mother was his best friend throughout her life. She guided him with unparalleled love.

He was a devout Lutheran of which his confirmation was one of his proudest accomplishments Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Betty Rieck; and by Aaron David Jones. He is survived by his siblings, Paul Andrew Rieck and South Bend, Susanjane L. Sampson of Lumberton, TX, Ruthalice J. Rieck of South Bend, and Marybeth L. (David) Jones of Osceola; nieces, Meredith Jones, Ashley Jones, and Sydney Doyle Rieck; nephews, Jason Sampson and Craig Sampson; and great nephews, Kasey Sampson and Nicholas Sampson. What concerned Robert was that he always wanted to be like his sisters and brother.

His being handicapped was never able to stop him from having a heart of gold and enjoying the people in his life. His willingness to help other people was important to him. His family always told Robert that it was them that needed him; and his face lit up.

Robert Lee Rieck’s heart belong to his family, and his family belonged to Robert. “He will always be with us. We are so proud of Robert and love him dearly.

Thank you for our special time with you for these past 61 years”. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, December 28, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 51490 Laurel Drive, South Bend, IN 46637. Graveside services will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.

Friends may gather with the family from 4:00 PM till 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and one hour prior to services on Friday. Memorial Contributions may be given to the church or to Special Olympics of St. Joseph County, 106 Lincolnway East, Mishawaka, IN 46544. Palmer Funeral Home River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
