Obituary for Robert William Borders Robert William Borders, MD Bernice, LA Robert William Borders, MD currently of Bernice, LA and previously Shreveport and Bossier City passed peacefully at his home on June 29, 2018. He was born on November 17, 1925 to Olive Irene Cozine and Halbert Adrian Borders in Stratton, CO. From the age of nine, Robert lived with his adopted parents, Hazel Mae Borders and Herschel C. Harrison in Garden City, KS and Lamar, CO.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his daughter Anne Louise Borders Stewart, sister and brother-in-law Diane Alain Borders and Tom Moore, stepfather Oscar N. Harris, daughter-in-law Sally Metcalf Borders, previous wife and mother of children, Zulma McDermott Borders, Vietnamese refugee sponsored by Dr. Borders’ in 1975, Chuong Ho Duong, Dr. Borders attended schools in Stratton and Vona, CO, Garden City, KS, and Lamar, CO graduating in 1943. He earned his Eagle Scout ranking with the Boy Scouts of America, played the piano, and played on basketball and tennis teams. Immediately after high school he was accepted in the United States Naval V12 program that trained medical officers for service in World War II.

He was sent to Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, Ruston, LA for his pre-medical studies. He entered medical school at the age of 19 years at University of Kansas School of Medicine and began his medical practice at the age of 23. He is a veteran of both World War II and Korean Conflict and served as Lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve, General Duty Medical Officer, Naval Base, Corpus Christi, TX and aboard the USS Jason ARH-1 as the ship’s Medical Officer based in Japan during the Korean War.

Dr. Borders trained in the specialty of Anesthesiology at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC; 1952 -54. , and was board certified by American Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiology. He practiced Anesthesiology for over 62 years mainly in north Louisiana in Shreveport-Bossier and Monroe-Bastrop hospitals.

He also worked with Joseph W. Cush, DDS in his Outpatient Dental Office in Shreveport for more than 30 years. His survivors are: Wife of 49 years: Emma Jean Sewell Borders Sons: Robert Harrison Borders and Janet, T. William Borders, DDS and Gay, Blaine M. Borders, MD and Carla, and Jonathan O. Borders, MD. Grandsons are Jason Borders, Aaron Borders, James R. Borders, and Russell Stevenson.

Granddaughters are Rebecca Borders and Jay Wilson, Paige Borders, Lauren Stevenson, Julie Anne Stewart, Caroline Stewart, Olivia Stewart, Audry Claire Borders, and Christine and Garrett Romagossa. Also has five great-grandchildren. Special friend: Linda McNeal Vietnamese Refugee Family survivers are Hong Duong, Duc and Hanh Duong, Quang and Dao Duong, Thien and Binh Cao, Trung and Nhu Duong, Thuy and Jeff Miles and fourteen grandchildren.

Family expresses their appreciation to all of the caregivers especially Linda McNeal, Dr. Steven Venters, Dr. Steven Unkel, Dr. Virginia Gonzales, the staff of Jordan Hospice, and Prime Care Home Health. Services will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel in Springhill, LA. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon on Saturday, prior to the service.
