Obituary of Robert Eggers On April 10, 2018, Robert K. Eggers, 60, of Roanoke, VA, decided that it was time for him to leave his wheelchair behind and go dance with the angels, his first time ever to be able to dance. Robert was born on March 24, 1958, in Lynchburg, VA. He graduated from William Fleming High School with the Class of 1978.

Robert is survived by his brothers, Ralph Eggers (Maurine); James Eggers (special friend Betty Pugh), sisters Betty Eggers and Rose Shifflett (Mark). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Pat Eggers.

Robert was a dedicated individual who was passionate about the rights for individuals with disabilities and became a staunch advocate for the cause. Robert joined the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, 28 years ago, so that he could help ensure that others with disabilities could see that you can lead a normal life. He helped survey businesses in the downtown area of the City of Roanoke to ensure they were accessible to any individual with disabilities and would lead the fight for it to be corrected.

He gave freely of his time whenever volunteers were needed. Robert continued these efforts up until the time he became ill. For several years, Robert was also a member of the Mayors Committee for People with Disabilities.

He worked his way up the ladder until he eventually became Chair of the Committee. After this program disbanded, Robert continued his leadership role as Chair of the Valley Advocates and Leaders for Understanding and Education (VALUE). In March, 2018, Robert was presented a “Star” for being a “Star in the Star City” by Mayor Sherman P. Lea, Sr

This “Star” honored his service and leadership to the Mayors Committee and for serving with integrity and pride. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Robert’s many caregivers for their many acts of kindness, compassion, and care. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center 1502 Williamson Road Roanoke, Virginia 24012 A celebration of Robert’s life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road.

Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Simpson Funeral Home. Condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.
