Obituary for Mr. Russell Arthur Matheson Russell Arthur Matheson, 87, of Asheville passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Care Partners Hospice following a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of Asheville, he was born March 7, 1931 to the late George Arthur and Lillian Russell Manchester Matheson. A 1950 graduate of Lee Edwards High School and a graduate of Asheville Biltmore College, Mr. Matheson was a veteran of the US Navy having served during the Korean War.

He retired from Bell Telephone Company after 30 years of service. Active in the Boy Scouts, he had Troop 24 for many years. He and the troops made three trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

Mr. Matheson was also a 32nd Degree Mason in the Biltmore Masonic Lodge, having previously served as Master and was a volunteer with Beaverdam Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Reams Matheson and they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on August 22, 2018.

Also surviving are his son, Russell Andrew Matheson and his wife, Debbie; his daughters, Susan Lynn Matheson and Janet Reams Ellington; four grandchildren, Joshua, Jenni, Elijah and James; great-grandchildren, Richard and Jackson; his sisters, Lynda Matheson Wilber and her husband, Robert and Georgia Matheson Cowan and her husband, Bill and four nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, June 18, 2018 in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue with Reverend David Blackmon officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM.

Masonic rites will be conducted by Biltmore Masonic Lodge.
