Sallie Wallace, a resident of Brevard, died peacefully, in her sleep, at Asheville Specialty Hospital Friday morning, June 8, 2018, after many weeks of fierce struggling with a number of health issues. She went to her next life with the blessing of her husband and children. Sallie was born and reared in Scott County, Virginia, one of 7 children of Irene and Hobson Dougherty.
From first grade through graduation in a class of 12, she attended Midway School in Scott County. She subsequently attended and graduated from Radford College, now Radford University, in 1956, with a BS degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics in Gate City, Virginia; Walland Tennessee and Rosman, North Carolina.
She married her husband of 60 plus years, William S. Wallace, in 1957. After teaching at Rosman for 2 years she retired to start her family and lovingly care for her two children Jim and Sherri during their early childhood. She later became the Food Service Director at Brian Center Nursing Home in Brevard and served in that position for 20 years before her retirement in 1995.
Throughout her life in Brevard she has served her community, and particularly her church, in many capacities. During her many years as a member of St. Philip’s she was a member of the Vestry, a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Altar Guild, a volunteer and chairperson of The Shop of St. Philip’s, and a member of a number of service committees. In the community, she served in many ways such as Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and Hospital Volunteer.
But most of all she served everyone, particularly her family, with her smile, her friendliness, her care and her love of life. She leaves a hole in our hearts. Sallie is survived by her husband, Bill, of Brevard; her daughter, Sherri and spouse David Fletcher of Denver, NC; her son Jim and spouse Raul Amponin of Greensboro, NC,; her granddaughter Joanna Fletcher of Raleigh, NC; her brother Terry and wife Thresa of Blountville, TN; her sister Margaret of Kingsport TN; and a number of nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of Sallie’s life at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Brevard at 1:30 PM Saturday, June 23rd. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Philip’s Memorial Fund or St. Philip’s Foundation, 256 East Main Street, Brevard, NC 28712 God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered: “COME TO ME”. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating. Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Sallie, we will miss you deeply.
