Obituary of Ruth Smith Ruth Whitaker Smith, age 86, of Sophia died Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Randolph Hospice House. Mrs. Smith was born May 18, 1931 in Guilford County to Sam and Helen Whitaker. Ruth was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed reading and crocheting.

She was formerly employed as a beautician for 18 years and was a sales clerk at Classic Breed for 18 years. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her twin sister, Ruby Kivett, sister, Doris Craven and brothers, Gilbert, Harry, Billy, James and Paul Whitaker. She is survived by her daughter, Tawana Voncannon of Sophia; husband, James Ray “J.R.” Smith of Sophia; grandchildren, Ashlyn Rich of New York, Forrest Rich of Sophia; brother, Vernon Whitaker of Climax; numerous nieces and nephews who she loved very much.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 5:00 pm in the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave. , Asheboro with Rev. David Angel officiating.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009.
