Obituary for Sandra “Sandy” Smith WHITE STONE—Sandra N. Smith, 67, of White Stone, the daughter of Elaine (Paul) and David Noonan Sr., passed away on April 23, 2018. Sandy was born on January 20, 1951. She grew up in Gilman, Wis.

, and graduated from Gilman High School in 1969. While in the Twin Cities, Sandy met Donna Smith, from Lancaster. They were like two peas in a pod and became fast friends.

Donna convinced Sandy to write to her brother Wayne, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. Wayne flew out to meet her and that was it. Wayne and Sandy were married in December 1972, and later settled in White Stone.

Ten years later they gave birth to twins, Chris and Krista. Sandy’s father David Sr., also served in the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II. Sandy’s husband (Wayne) is former Navy and her daughter (Krista) and son-in-law (Mike Laggini) are also both former Navy.

Mike and Krista now have a son (Ethan) and a daughter (Elaine). Go Navy. In 1973 with Wayne away from home, Sandy began a career in banking.

About halfway through her career Sandy had a change of heart and became a registered nurse instead. As most of us know nurses have big hearts and Sandy had one of the biggest. One day a stray beagle showed up on her doorstep and as you may have already guessed, Lucky stayed.

Sandy’s favorite outdoor activities were sightseeing, gardening and taking walks with her little buddy. Like her mother, Sandy’s favorite indoor activities were reading, sewing and quilting. Sandy had a knack for making beautiful quilts and gave away most of what she made.

She was in the process of making a quilt for her granddaughter Elaine, and had enlisted the help of a good friend to help make a special quilt for herself and Wayne but sadly that will not be done now. Sandy is survived by her husband, Wayne; her children, Chris and Krista (Mike) Laggini and two grandchildren, Ethan and Ellie; her three brothers, Rick (Mary) Noonan, Jim (Collen) Noonan and David Noonan; six nieces and nephews; her mother-in-law, Margaret Smith; and her sister-in-law, Donna (Don) Holt and their children, Noel and Hillary. Her parents, Elaine and David Noonan; and father-in-law, Clifford Smith, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at White Stone United Methodist Church. Send cards and letters to Wayne Smith, 199 Clark Point Drive, White Stone, VA 22578. As long as any of Sandy’s family and vast number of friends remain alive, Sandy and her big warm smile will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
