Sandra (Kerr) Shaffer, 81, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2019 while at Communities at Indian Haven. The daughter of Lisle and Gertrude (Iams) Kerr, she was born February 7, 1938 in Indiana, PA. Sandy was a graduate of Indiana Area School District and received a degree in education from the Indiana State Teachers College in 1960.

She was a life long member of the Phi Mu Sorority and a former member of the Elks Auxiliary BPOE #931. Sandy was employed as a math teacher for 25 years at the Indiana Area School District. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Sandy enjoyed seasonal couples 500 card club at friends’ homes for many years. She spent nearly 50 years making memories at their cottage in the Allegheny Riverside Association they shared with friends and family. She liked going on casino bus trips, bowling, and boating on the river.

Surviving is her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Shaffer, whom she wed August 20, 1960; daughter, Barbara S. Peles and her husband, Gregory; and a granddaughter, Kathleen Peles. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Lindsay. Friends will be received on Thursday, February 28, from 4 to 8p.m. at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana.

An additional hour of viewing will be held from 10 to 11a.m. on Friday, March 1. Funeral service will immediately follow in the Lefdahl Chapel. Interment in the Oakland Cemetery will follow.

Friends may send flowers, if they wish, or memorial gifts in Sandy’s honor may be made to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dean’s Merit Scholarship Fund for the College of Education and Communications. Checks can be made payable to the Foundation for IUP, please include Fund 5305 and Sandy’s name in the memo portion of the check. Donations may be mailed to Foundation for IUP, Sutton Hall Room G1, 1011 South Drive, Indiana, PA 15705.
