Shirley P. Steinmetz, 87, of Notre Dame, IN passed away peacefully at 10:45 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2018 at Andre Place, Holy Cross, IN surrounded by her loving family and treasured caregivers. She was born on July 15, 1931 in Osceola, IN to the late Chauncey and Kathryn (Hartig) Proudfit. She was delivered at home by her uncle Dr. Charles Proudfit.

On May 8, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in South Bend, IN, she was united in marriage to William R. Steinmetz who preceded her in death on May 25, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Louis Proudfit and her sister, Nancy Troyer. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Janet Amphlett and son-in-law, Godfrey of Cambridge, MA; son, William Steinmetz of Lakeville, IN; two grandchildren, Kailashi Zigler of Portland, OR and Nicholas Amphlett of Brooklyn, NY; and sister, Charlotte Rosenthal of Niles, MI and Bonita Springs, FL.

Shirley managed the sales clerks and did window displays for Wyman’s Department Store and then worked as a secretary for the Chamber of Commerce where she met her husband to be. She was a member of The Junior League of South Bend and a board member of the Children’s Dispensary. She was from a family of painters and had a true gift for fashion and design.

Shirley will be remembered for her sense of humor, her love of friends and family, the jazz piano and a good dirty martini. One of her favorite toasts was, “blue skies and green lights! ” She and her late husband were both pilots, and spent many years flying together in the cockpit of small planes.

She also had a gift for story telling and was the poet laureate of the family. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2018 at Dujarie House, Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel, 54515 IN 933, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday at the chapel prior to the service.

Private burial will take place on Monday at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Shirley may be offered to Hospice Foundation, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Online condolence may be sent to the family at www.
