Shirley Simmons January 10, 1935 – February 03, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Shirley Simmons, age 84, died peacefully on February 3, 2019. She was born on January 10, 1935 in Slanesville, WV to Mabel and Ward Largent. After graduating from Romney High School in 1952, she was employed in Washington D.C.

She worked there until marrying and raising her family. Shirley was employed by Hampshire Memorial Hospital for 15 years beginning in 1975, as an Admissions Office Supervisor. Upon her retirement, she accepted a position with FEMA as a Human Re representative, traveling to major disasters as assigned.

Shirley is survived by her three sons and their wives, Jamie and Lee Simmons (SC), Chris and Teresa Simmons (FL), and David Simmons (VA); her daughter and her husband, Beth and Joe Curry (VA); and grandchildren Morgan Simmons, Dylan Curry, and Hannah Curry. Shirley was an avid reader, with hours spent at the Hampshire County Library. In retirement, she picked up painting and left her children beautiful pieces to remember her.

She loved being a grandmother to Morgan, Dylan and Hannah. Watching them on the playing fields, vacationing, and babysitting, she cherished those moments. But not much could stand in the way of watching her WVU Mountaineers play football!

She is preceded in death by her brother Donald (Bobby) Largent of Capon Bridge, WV and parents Ward and Mabel Largent, of Romney, WV. Special thanks to Legacy Hospice and Rosewood Assisted Living in Charlottesville, VA for their love and care. At her request, she was cremated and a celebration of her life will be held at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, WV on the weekend of May 17th, followed by a private graveside service in Slanesville, WV.
