Obituary for Sister Catherine Howard, O.P. SISTER CATHERINE HOWARD, O.P., a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 42 years died on November 9, 2018. Sr. Catherine was 67 years of age. Sr. Catherine was born on December 28, 1950, Bronx, N.Y., to Thomas and Catherine Eberhard Howard.

She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on December 30, 1976 from Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Elmsford, N.Y. Sr. Cathy’s reception into the Congregation was on July, 31, 1977; she professed her first vows on June 10, 1979, and final vows on November 29, 1986. Sister received a BA in Psychology from Mercy College, in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; held a MA in Human Services from New York University; held a MA in Public Administration from the College of Human Services; and a PhD. in Social Work from Fordham University.

Her ministries included: Child Care and Group Living at St. Dominic’s Home (1976-9177 and 1978-1980); teacher at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Bronx, N.Y. (1980-1982); and Alpha Academy, Jamaica, W.I. (1982-1985). She was Mission Project Service Director, Manhattan (1985-1989): Assistant Director at Siena House, Bronx, N.Y. (1989-1992); adjunct Professor of Professional Studies and Professor of Studies in Management at the College for Human Services, Manhattan (1992-1995); Development Office at St. Dominic’s Convent, Blauvelt, N.Y. (1999-2005); Assistant Professor of Social Work Fordham University (2004-2005) as well as ministering at the Ryan White Program Dominican Sisters Family Health Service, during this same period. Sr. Cathy was elected and served as Congregational Councilor (2005-2011), and Congregational President (2011-2017).

Following a sabbatical in 2017, she served at Dominican College in the Office of the President. In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Cathy is survived by her sister, Virginia Reeves; her brothers John, Peter and Thomas, as well as several nieces, nephews, and a grandniece and grandnephews. Sr. Cathy was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Catherine, and her bother Timothy.
