Obituary of Susan Fortier Bangor – Susan S. Fortier passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Bangor, surrounded by family and close friends. She was born in Bangor, November 17, 1952 and has lived in the community all of her life. Susan graduated from Bangor High School in 1971.
She began nursing school at Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA before graduating with her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME in 1974. She then went on to work at Eastern Maine Medical Center where she spent 43 years as a Registered Nurse for the hospital. The majority of her professional career was spent working in the OB/GYN department caring for new mothers and their infants.
Susan was a dedicated nurse and passionate about caring for her patients and their families. She also spent many years working as a Lactation Consultant and was a co-founder of the Lactation Department at Eastern Maine Medical Center. In this role, she had a profound effect on all the mothers she worked with and was loved and respected by her patients and co-workers.
Susan met her husband Bob Fortier at a community dance at the Brewer Auditorium. They were high school sweethearts, married in 1975 and recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. Susan and Bob spent their married life working and living in Bangor.
She most enjoyed spending time her family. She was also an avid gardener and baker and enjoyed the beauty of Maine. Susan was a trusted professional, a deeply caring person and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.
Those who were lucky to know or meet her will remember her for her tremendous warmth, kindness generosity and keen sense of humor. She is survived by husband Bob Fortier; daughters Kate Foley and husband Steve of Bangor and Marianne Dunning and husband Drew of Brewer; grandchildren D.J. and Rachel Dunning and Henry and Nora Foley; sister Nancy Walker and husband Dale of Orono. She is also survived by an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Harris Southard. Family and friends are invited to visit 3-5 PM Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A church service will be held 2 PM Sunday, June 10, at All Soul’s Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor.
Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. All are invited back to the church following the burial for a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association at alsa.org.
