Sylvia Frankel Poprocki, 97, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 after living a long, full life. Sylvia was born May 8, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. She and her family moved to New Jersey in 1957.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, in 1995, and her son, Kenny, in 2015. Philip was a merchant seaman and was gone for months at a time. In His infinite wisdom, Jesus Christ knew what kind of mother Jerry and Kenny would need so He equipped Sylvia with the skills that would serve the family well until Philip would return from his many voyages.

Sylvia was a woman of incredible strength and courage that would do a lion right proud and at times has shown great compassion for others. She was a multi-talented homemaker in that she was an excellent cook, teacher and seamstress. She prepared nutritious meals for her family and made time to teach each of her boys how to ride a bicycle (running up and down the street alongside them), how to roller skate and how to fish by putting the line and bobber in the bathtub.

Not only did she knit sweaters for her boys but was busy at her sewing machine making everything from clothes to Halloween costumes. Sylvia’s intelligence was impressive. She graduated from Pratt Institute after studying fashion design.

She was a mapmaker during WWII for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The maps that she created were used by pilots when they made bombing runs over enemy territory. In later years, she worked as a bookkeeper, all the while earning a college degree from Trenton State College.

In her later years, she volunteered at the local hospital and was awarded Volunteer of the Year. Survivors include her son, Jerry, and his wife, Ginger, of Harrisburg, NC; her sister, Tess, of Oakland Gardens, New York; nephews, Bobby and Neal, from New York and nieces Diane of New York and Danielle of California. She was a devoted and loving mother to both her sons, Jerry and Kenny.

It was Sylvia’s wish that she have no memorial service and that she go quietly and peacefully. She got her wish. Hartsell Funeral Home of Harrisburg is serving the Poprocki family.
