Terry’s Obituary Stratham, NH- Terry W. Barnes, 77, of Stratham, NH died at Portsmouth Regional Hospital on December 31, 2018. Terry was born on March 30, 1941 in York, Maine to Aubrey (Barnes) Downs and Dwight Barnes. He was raised by his mother and step father, John Downs in Portsmouth, NH along with his four siblings, Janice Thorpe and husband Richard of Kittery, ME; Joanne Tobey of Greenland, NH; Dennis Barnes and wife Pat of York, ME; and Judith Larmie of Middleton, NH.

Terry was a graduate of Portsmouth Regional High School, class of 1960. Following graduation, he was employed by Mobil Oil Corporation as a Merchant Marine, working his way up to Chief Engineer. He retired in 1983.

In 1987, he was elected to the Board of Selectmen of Stratham where he served two, three-year terms. Terry then went on to become Building Inspector for the town of Stratham, retiring in 2014. At the time of his passing, Terry served as part-time building inspector for the town of New Castle, NH Terry had many side projects, including running a golf driving range on his property; building and selling children’s playhouses; and processing and selling fire wood.

Always a presence in the community that he loved so much, Terry served on many boards including The Heritage Commission and The Stratham Hill Park Association. He also served on the Stratham Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was married in 1963 to Margeretta (Patsy), a native of Ireland.

They enjoyed trips to Ireland over the years, along with trips to Florida and road trips around New England in their RV. He also enjoyed going to NASCAR races with friends and fishing with his grandson. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patsy, and two daughters, Christina Sargent and husband Ralph of Stratham, and Shannon Ward of Stratham, and four beloved grandchildren, Caitlin and Devin Sargent, and Amelia and Bennett Ward, along with many nieces and nephews.

Services- A time of visitation will take place from 5-8pm, Monday, January 7, at the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd, Kittery, Maine, 03904. A service will take place the following day, Tuesday, January 8, at 10am; burial to immediately follow. To leave online condolences please visit www.
