Terry Lee Stevig, 71, of Wauconda, IL, passed away on April 14, 2018. Terry was born in Peoria, IL on April 23, 1946, son of John and Betty (Markley) Stevig. He was educated in Morton Public Schools and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Illinois State University and his Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois University.

Terry and family suffered the greatest sadness when son David died of cancer in 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marcy Howard, his brother Craig Stevig, and mother in law Ella Wittmer. He is survived by many brothers and sisters- in- law, father in law Maurice Wittmer, many nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Terry was a devoted teacher and guidance counselor for over 34 years at Wauconda High School. Many years were spent coaching varsity girls and boys soccer and tennis. He also helped to lead the Wauconda 6th grade outdoor education program at G.W.C. for 16 years.

With a passion for helping kids, Terry took great pride in the work he accomplished as an educator. He had a lifetime love of learning and his curiosity led him to explore many subjects and read lots of different types of literature. He was an avid reader of audio books, and yes, that is reading too!

He was an active library patron at Wauconda Area Library, also serving on the Library Board for around 30 years and was President for the past few years. He was always ready to debate or discuss topics with anyone and would love to take an opposing side. His love of soccer went beyond just coaching but to following the current Wauconda High School soccer teams, the Chicago Fire and the U.S. Women’s National Team.

He was a lifetime athlete playing varsity sports in high school and enjoyed morning basketball with the guys for over twenty years. Tennis, though, was the sport he never wanted to live without, spending three days a week drilling and playing at the Crystal Lake Racket Club. He was able to share this sport with his friends, wife, kids, son-in-law and most recently grandchildren.

He and Ruth shared many interests and they spent much of their retired life attending plays and concerts and traveling. He was a collector of Legos and jigsaw puzzles and would often work on them late into the night. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, friend, teacher, coach and mentor to so many and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 19, 2018, from 2:00 pm to time of funeral service at 5:00 pm, at Kisselburg-Wauconda Funeral Home 235 N. Main St., Wauconda, IL 60084. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the David Andrew Stevig Scholarship Fund at Wauconda High School, 555 N. Main St. Wauconda, IL 60084 (847-526-6611) or Wauconda Area Library, 801 N.
